Chinese Age Charts, One Of Many Old Wives Tales Of Gender Prediction
There are many fun and silly ways to predict the gender of a baby. Pregnant woman use Chinese age charts, jewelry, food choices and body shapes to name a few. These old wives tales may not be scientifically proven, but they are a mainstay in the mythology surrounding pregnancy.
The chart uses the mother's age (based on the Chinese Calendar) at the time of conception mixed with the month of conception to determine gender. It would take a mathematician to find the patterns in this chart. A woman at age 18 only has two months that she may conceive a girl, yet at age 32 the reverse is true. Somehow, China's overpopulation of girls doesn't seem to tell the same story.
It is believed that there is a correlation between the direction of an object swinging and gender. Two versions of one old wives tale say that when the object swings in a circle, the baby is a boy and if the object swings in a line, the baby is a girl. In one story, the object is a mother's wedding ring swinging over the belly of the mother. A swinging needle over the wrist or hand is the other test. Coincidently, the person holding the string doesn't seem to be a factor in the direction of the swing.
Many mothers claim to have cravings during pregnancy. The old wives came up with tales to predict the sex of the baby around the cravings too. Cravings for sweet foods indicate a little lady, whereas spicy, sour, and salty suggest a lad. One of the old wives must've been Mother Goose. The nursery rhyme, "What are Little Boys Made of" has a familiar theme.
Apparently, the heart rate of the fetus is also a determiner of gender. A faster heartbeat predicts a female and slower heart rate is a tell for a male. This old wives tale had to have been born in the 20th Century, hence the use of modern medical techniques such as fetal heart rate monitors and sonograms.
